| Thallus foliose, loosely adnate, orbicular to 8 cm wide or irregularly spreading, grey or grey with black margins, lines or patches. Lobes contiguous to subcontiguous centrally or throughout thallus, occasionally developing marginal, linear, di- or trichotomously branched lobes lacking lateral contacts, 2–4.5 mm wide, evenly inflated, hollow. Upper surface convex to ±flattened in older lobes, smooth, shiny, usually black-margined; esorediate. Medulla blackened adjacent to lobe cavity. Lower surface strongly wrinkled, eperforate, pale brown at apices. Apothecia common, evenly distributed, 1–7 mm wide, shortly pedicellate, not swollen basally; disc ±shiny, concave becoming undulate-distorted, red-brown to dark brown; thalline exciple entire, thin. Ascospores 7–9 × 4.5–5.5 µm. Pycnidia subglobose. Conidia bifusiform, 5.5–6.5 × 0.7 µm. CHEMISTRY: cortex K+ yellow; medulla K-, C-, KC+ rose, P-. Atranorin, chloroatranorin, physodic acid (major); oxyphysodic acid (minor); alectoronic acid (trace). | ||
